El Alebrije Ballet

A reimagining of The Nutcracker ballet through
dance, theater, music, and puppetry

About

Join A Step Beyond on November 6th or 7th for a reimagining of The Nutcracker ballet through dance, theater, music, and puppetry. El Alebrije tells the enchanting story of María, a young girl celebrating her Quinceañera. When her father gifts her a mystical El Alebrije, she embarks on a magical journey across Mexico through a series of dreams, discovering her father’s love despite the distance between them.

By attending El Alebrije, you help provide local students with dance education, academic support, family services, and college and career readiness programs- empowering them to pursue their dreams.

This performance will feature over 150 A Step Beyond students between the ages of 8 and 18 years, student tech crew, and numerous parent guest performers and volunteers.

We’ve partnered with Bocón, a youth theater company, to create a culturally resonant script, and with the San Diego Guild of Puppetry to build a stunning large-scale puppet. The performance also features music by Mariachi Champaña Nevin, with choreography, costumes, and props by A Step Beyond’s talented staff, students, and volunteers.

This year’s production will take place at The Center Theatre, California Center for the Arts, Escondido, promising to be one of our most exciting performances this year. You won’t want to miss it!

In Loving Memory of Pedro Orozco

This performance of El Alebrije is dedicated to Pedro Orozco, beloved husband of Norma and father of Brayan and Jovanny, who shared the stage with us and was a part of our ASB family.

Pedro was a light—a presence that brought warmth, love, and joy to those around him. We are so grateful that he was part of El Alebrije, and that we have the memory of sharing this story with him.

To Norma, Brayan, Jovanny, and your entire family, thank you for sharing Pedro with us and allowing him to be part of our story. Tonight, we dance in his honor, carrying his light with us and surrounding your family with the love of this community.

Pedro, you are missed, loved, and will always be part of our ASB family.

The Story of El Alebrije

The story follows María as she prepares with her mother, aunt, and siblings for her Quinceañera—a celebration of her fifteenth birthday. Amid the joy, her father’s absence weighs heavily; deported to Mexico years ago, he cannot return. Still, María quietly hopes he’ll find a way to be there. In his stead, he sends her an Alebrije—a hand-carved wooden spirit figure—and a letter filled with love and a longing to share his homeland’s beauty.

That night, María dreams of magical candles and scurrying cockroaches. When danger looms, the candles awaken the Alebrije and her father’s carved toys to protect her. After the battle, the Alebrije carries María on a radiant journey through Mexico. In the end, her father appears, and María feels their family reunited in spirit—proof that love transcends distance, borders, and time.

A Message to our Community

Dear Community,

Through the story of María, we honor the threads that connect us all – love, family, hope, and the courage to pursue a better future. Her journey, told through dance and narration, reflects the human experience of facing life’s challenges while holding onto joy and connection. We recognize that this story may touch deeply for some, and we offer it with care, holding space for reflection, healing, and shared humanity. As we celebrate the beauty of Mexican culture here in San Diego, we hope it also feels like a celebration of how cultures, communities, and hearts can come together in joy and belonging.

With gratitude,
A Step Beyond

Un mensaje para nuestra comunidad

Querida comunidad,

A Step Beyond
